The Ministry of Interior (MoI) is preparing a new electronic service that will allow citizens and residents to update their Qatar ID (QID) photograph through approved photography studios.
The service is expected to connect with Metrash and the MoI website. It is being introduced in phases, so it may not yet be available to everyone. The Ministry said it would begin with a limited group of users before expanding access.
How will the service work?
The process will start when a user begins an MoI transaction that requires a personal photograph. The system will check the photo already registered in the Ministry’s records. If it needs to be updated, the user will receive a QR code to take to an approved photography studio.
The expected steps are:
- Start the relevant service through Metrash or the MoI website.
- If an updated photo is required, receive a QR code.
- Visit an approved photography studio and show the code.
- Have a new photo taken and uploaded by the studio through the Ministry’s system.
- Wait for the photo to be reviewed and approved.
- Continue the original transaction online.
The updated photo will be reflected in the Ministry’s records after approval.
What are the photo requirements?
Submitted photos must meet the required technical standards, which the Ministry says are based on international ICAO and ISO standards. The system will use automated checks, with manual review also available.
The Ministry has also warned that photos manipulated using artificial intelligence may be rejected if detected. Applicants should use an approved studio and follow the instructions provided through the service.
How can I find an approved studio?
The Ministry plans to list participating photography studios through Metrash and its official website. The listings are expected to include each studio’s name, location and working hours. Studios will also need QR code scanners to process requests.
When will the service launch?
The service is planned for a phased rollout. The MoI said technical preparations had been completed, while final technical and logistical arrangements with photography studios were still being checked before the official launch. Users should check Metrash or the MoI website for availability and current instructions.
Why is the service being introduced?
The service aims to make photo updates more convenient by reducing visits to government service centres and allowing eligible transactions to continue online. It is also intended to keep photographs in the Ministry’s records current and consistent.
Note: The service is being rolled out in phases. Check the official MoI channels before visiting a photography studio or starting a transaction.
