What Are the Legal Ways to Live in Qatar?
The most suitable residency route depends on whether you are coming for employment, joining a family member, establishing a business or making a qualifying investment.
1. Employment Residency Through a Qatari Employer
Employment remains one of the most common ways to move to Qatar.
You must first receive a genuine job offer from a company authorized to employ foreign workers. The employer is generally responsible for starting the necessary work-visa and residency procedures.
After completing the required immigration steps, the employee may receive a Qatar ID, commonly known as a QID, which serves as proof of legal residency.

- Suitable family accommodation
- An attested marriage certificate
- Attested birth certificates for children
- Valid passports and supporting documents
- Health insurance and other immigration requirements
The Ministry of Interior currently states that private-sector employees must generally hold a technical or specialized profession and meet the applicable salary and housing requirements. 3. Starting a Company in Qatar

The company-establishment process may include:
- Selecting the appropriate legal structure and licensing platform
- Reserving a trade name
- Selecting the correct business activities
- Preparing the incorporation documents
- Obtaining the necessary government approvals
- Issuing the Commercial Registration

- Obtaining the Commercial Licence
- Issuing the establishment or computer card
- Applying for the applicable immigration and residency permissions
Registering a company does not automatically guarantee residency. The company and applicant must satisfy the relevant commercial, labour and immigration requirements.

4. Entrepreneur and Executive Residency Programmes
Qatar introduced dedicated residency categories for qualifying entrepreneurs and senior executives in 2026.
The Entrepreneur Residency is intended for eligible founders and co-founders who receive an official endorsement from a recognized business incubator in Qatar. Overseas entrepreneurs can apply, but they must satisfy the programme’s financial, professional, documentation and background requirements.
The Executive Residency is designed for qualifying senior executives who already hold a Qatar ID and are nominated by an eligible employer. Depending on the category and approval, it can provide a renewable residency of up to ten years.

5. Residency Through Property Ownership
Qualifying property ownership can provide another residency route for non-Qataris.
According to Qatar’s Real Estate Regulatory Authority:
- Property valued at QAR 730,000 or more may qualify for property-linked residency.
- Property valued at QAR 3,650,000 or more may provide permanent-residency benefits.

Can You Live in Qatar on a Tourist or Visit Visa?
A tourist or visit visa is intended for a temporary stay. It is not a substitute for a residence permit and does not give a visitor the automatic right to work in Qatar.
